Art Deco in Havana

Art Deco in Havana: tropical elegance.

Born in Paris and exported around the world, the Art Deco style found fertile and unique ground in Havana. Starting in the 1930s, as Cuba sought to assert its postcolonial identity, Art Deco established itself as the language of modernity. Influenced by North American trends, but also by local traditions, it manifested itself in bold, sensual, and deeply urban architecture.

Photographer: Nestor Marti.

This exhibition received support from the Embassy of Cuba in Belgium and the European Union, as well as the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Cuba.
It was organized as part of Art Deco Year 2025. Art Deco Year 2025 is jointly led by Urban and visit.brussels, in collaboration with Patrimoine & Culture asbl and their many partners.
